When the little train still ran through Valmetal (Mining Trail 3)
Am Eickhagen
59909 Bestwig
In order to reduce the rising transportation costs for lead and zinc ores, Stolberger Zink AG built its own 8 km long narrow-gauge railroad from Bestwig to Ramsbeck in 1896/97. The 750 mm gauge line ran through the Valmetal valley and connected the processing plant with the loading station. In total, the construction cost around 400,000 gold marks.
A special feature was the three-rail track in Ramsbeck, which enabled the removal of defective mine locomotives. In 55 years, the railroad transported over 500,000 tons of ore and goods at a maximum speed of 19 km/h. The small steam locomotive was later replaced by a diesel locomotive. Occasionally, the "little train" also transported people.
In 1952, the line was closed for economic reasons and the tracks were removed. Today, the former railway line is a popular hiking and cycling trail and connects Bestwig, Heringhausen and Ramsbeck.
