The two large Gradierwerks in the spa gardens invite you to breathe in the healthy salt air - just like at the seaside. Here, Bad Westernkotten's natural brine trickles over the blackthorn riser walls. This creates aerosols for healthy open-air inhalation.
Incidentally, the Gradierwerke have a combined grading area of 3,600 m² and are among the largest technical monuments of their kind in North Rhine-Westphalia. Gradierwerk I is the largest Kurpark-Gradierwerk in North Rhine-Westphalia!

Gradierwerk I was built in 1835 and used to extract salt until 1949. Today it is used for healthy open-air inhalation. It was added to the list of monuments of the town of Erwitte at the end of 1984.

How the Gradierwerk works
Brine flows from the brine spring through pipes to the Pumpenhaus. The Pumpenhaus has the task of pumping the brine into the water channels of the Gradierwerk. The water channels are located at the top of the Gradierwerk and distribute the brine water evenly. The brine then runs down the blackthorn brushwood walls from above. Liquid that has not evaporated runs off via the base and flows into the collecting basin.
