The Wasserschloß Laer was first mentioned in a document in 1268 as a fief of the Meschede Abbey - Bernolf von Lare is mentioned, who was the treasurer of the rich abbey at the time.

The Paderborn court master Heinrich von Westphalen acquired the Laer estate in 1602 and built a representative manor house in 1608 using older structures. The portal and the dome of the portal tower were built in 1669 and the castle complex was extended in 1764.

A beautiful footpath leads from the castle to the Klausenkapelle chapel with beautiful views over Meschede.

The castle is privately owned and cannot be visited.

The C4 bus line from Meschede bus station stops at Laer. It is also within walking distance via the Ruhr.
