Like many country castles in Westfalen, Körtlinghausen Castle owes its origins to a golden age of aristocratic architecture in the first half of the 18th century.
The family of the builder, Franz Otto Freiherr von und zu Weichs—who originally hailed from Bavaria—had taken possession of the estate in 1645 and thus initially owned an old castle complex first mentioned in 1398.
Around 1714, Franz Otto von und zu Weichs began construction of Körtlinghausen Castle based on plans by the Hildesheim architect Justus von Wehmer.
His son, Friedrich Ernst, helped usher in the golden age of courtly hunting in the Sauerland region. Both served the House of Wittelsbach, specifically Elector Clemens August, by making the necessary arrangements for the electoral hunts.
With their ownership of Körtlinghausen, the von Weichs family now belonged to the Westphalian knighthood, which held a significant share of political power in Westfalen.
When Kaspar Joseph von Weichs acquired the Körtlinghausen estate from the heirs of Clemens August, the property passed to the Barons of Fürstenberg, in whose possession the manor remains to this day.
