Goat pastures of the Ramsbeck miners (BergbauWanderweg 7)
59909 Bestwig
Goats used to play an important role in the everyday lives of Ramsbeck's miners. As "miners' cows", they provided milk, butter and cheese and thus ensured that many families had enough to eat. Around 1900, a goat breeding association was founded, which used common grazing areas on the mountain slopes around the village.
The animals were herded on the Ebendelle in the morning and on the Bastenberg in the afternoon. Club life around the goats was lively: The highlight was the annual "Hittenfest", a popular festival with humorous speeches and great participation from the village community.
Even though goats are no longer kept in Ramsbeck today, this section of the mining trail is a reminder of a special piece of the miners' everyday and social history.
