Erlinghausen is located east of the town center on a moderately undulating plateau in the “Rotes Land” region, right on the state border with Hessen. The town was first mentioned in 1107 in a property register of Corvey Abbey.

Erlinghausen (originally Erdelinghusen) is one of the many place names ending in “…inghusen” in the former Saxon district of Engern. Between approximately 700 and 800, the Engern, a Saxon sub-tribe, settled in northern Waldeck and the neighboring Sauerland region. The town is believed to have been founded during this period of settlement. The first precisely dated document dates from April 20, 1201. It records that Beringer von Horhusen donated nine farms from his estate in Erlinghausen to the monastery on the Eresberg.
On November 28, 1330, the Knights of Brobecke’s holdings in Erlinghausen were first attested; these had come into the possession of the Bredelar Monastery through various donations. In 1499, an exchange of estates took place between the Bredelar and Obermarsberg monasteries. As a result, the Benedictines at Eresburg gradually came to own the entire village territory.
In 1572, the unique circumstance that the residents of Erlinghausen held citizenship rights in the town of Marsberg was first reported. On December 29, 1805, monastic rule in Erlinghausen came to an end. The Hessian-Darmstadt government in Arnsberg became the new landlord.
In 1808, Erlinghausen became its own schultheissen district. This marked the end of its dependence on the town of Marsberg. The residents became Prussian subjects in 1816. As early as 1824, the mayoral district was dissolved again, and the town became part of the newly formed Marsberg mayoralty, later known as the Marsberg district. It was not until June 24, 1915, that the parish also became an independent vicariate.
