St. Magnus Church in Niedermarsberg, Casparistraße, 34431 Marsberg
Jesus Christ Church in Meinerzhagen, Kirchstraße 17, 58540 Meinerzhagen
The Roman Way is an important section of the Way of St. James in North Rhine-Westphalia, leading pilgrims from Paderborn via Marsberg, Elspe and Meinerzhagen to Cologne. In the Sauerland, the route follows the route of a former Roman military and trade route, combining history, nature and spirituality in a special way.
The Sauerland section begins in Marsberg, a historic town with a medieval town center and the imposing provost church of St. Magnus. From here, the trail leads through idyllic valleys and wooded heights - past historic farms, chapels and well-preserved villages.
In Elspe , the Roman Trail meets the historic Heidenstraße, which also leads from Leipzig to Cologne. In earlier centuries, the town was an important resting and crossing point on the old pilgrimage routes.
The route continues across the southern Sauerland - past places such as Attendorn, with its historic Altstadt and the famous Atta-Höhle cave, to Meinerzhagen. Here it joins the Elisabeth Trail, which leads towards Bergisches Land and on to Cologne - an important place on the way to Santiago de Compostela.
Along the entire route in the Sauerland region, the partner businesses of the Sauerland-Camino offer offer pilgrim-friendly accommodation. These are often in quiet locations, offer stamping points for the pilgrim's passport, as well as opportunities to stop, relax and meet others - all in the spirit of traditional hospitality along the Way of St. James.
From Marsberg, you always follow the official logo of the Way of St. James.
Meinerzhagen can be reached from Cologne every hour on the RB 25 and from the Ruhrgebiet, the RB 52 runs every two hours from Hagen Hbf to Lüdenscheid-Brügge and from there on to Meinerzhagen on the RB 25.
