The Bilstein area and its surroundings lie in the attractive "transitional landscape" between the wooded mountains of the Sauerland to the south and the open limestone plateau to the north. The latter, in turn, is divided by very striking hilltops of less weathered limestone, on which a rich flora and fauna have been able to develop their habitats.
The landscape has a park-like character in its diversity and is highly attractive. The changes in the geology of the subsoil that are responsible for this can also be experienced through the soil outcrops associated with the quarrying of limestone and diabase . From the heights, there are fascinating distant views of the different landscape typologies.
The "Geologischer Sprung" theme trail explains the special geological, topographical and cultural-historical situation of the Brilon limestone hilltop landscape and the Bilstein. The title comes from the special feature that two different geological testimonies from the Devonian period can be experienced in a very small space: the Kalkkuppen of the Brilon plateau on the one hand and the diabase deposits of the Bilstein on the other.
The "Geologischer Sprung" themed trail is a circular trail that offers interesting views of the landscape around the Bilstein and the town of Brilon as well as fascinating insights into geology.
The highlight is the viewing platform on the 634 m high Bilsteinhalde.
From the parking lot, head towards the youth hostel/Hölsterloh, past the golf course, then turn right before Hohe Anna towards Frettholz. Then cross under the B251 and immediately turn right again towards Tettler. Then up to Bilsteinhalde, then down the same path again and on to the starting point - the parking lot opposite Gasthof Gruss.
Sturdy footwear, sometimes telescopic poles are helpful.
The trail leads over long stretches on asphalted ground with little traffic and runs between two quarries. A relatively steep section leads to the summit, which should be tackled by hikers in good physical condition.
Rescue points on the hiking trail posts.
The refuge below the summit can be used as a waiting area - if you don't want to go all the way up.
