You can recharge your batteries at the bubbling springs in the area surrounding the highest village in the Sauerland at just under 800 m above sea level. Altastenberg is located in the Hochsauerland district about 2 km northwest of the Kahler Asten (841.9 m) and about 5 km as the crow flies west of Winterberg between the headwaters of the Lenne to the south and the Neger to the northwest. It is located near the crest of the Rothaargebirge, over which part of the Rhine-Weser watershed runs. We experience the Renau and Lenne springs, the Kahler Asten, parts of the Rothaarsteig and an idyllic landscape that invites you to go on extensive hiking tours.

Directions

From the Haus des Gastes, we start diagonally opposite the wayside shrine onto the Kurweg (X27), which we leave after 100 m on the left towards Hotel Kirchmeier. Turn right there and follow the X27 through mixed forests into the beautiful Renau valley. Take the As1and WHT (Winterberg Hochtour) downhill to the right across the Renauwiese meadow, where we can take a break at the refuge and enjoy the natural surroundings. With a bit of luck, we may find the "spotted orchid" here, a Sauerland orchid species. We continue along As1 via the "Brückenpfad", a wooden footbridge that leads us a few hundred meters over the fascinating course of the Renau stream (danger of slipping when wet!). After the first bridge, turn right uphill and immediately right again onto the second bridge. Numerous information boards provide information about animals, plants and the natural environment. Continue with As1and WHT left uphill to the northern slope. After crossing the L640, turn right with the red sign of the Rothaarsteig, past the "Blutstein" to the Asten plateau. Continue with the red signpost and in a wide arc over the Hochheide to the Astenturm. The highest point of the hike has been reached and invites you to take a short break with its viewing tower, restaurant and information center. We reach the source of the Lenne on the Rothaarsteig and continue on the Rothaarsteig down to the "Landwehr", before the village of Lenneplätze. To the right, the "Astenweg" marked with X 2 now leads us steeply down into the Lenne valley. This path is also partly marked with an X. After the fish ponds on the left, the trail climbs slightly uphill to the hunting lodges. Here you can see the "Schluckspecht" at the entrance to one of the huts. After the ascent, turn right and continue straight ahead at the Wenden with As3 and As4 towards Altastenberg, bypassing part of the "Hintersten Hohen Knochen". Near the "Sahnehang" ski lift, we emerge from the forest and follow the country road coming up from Westfeld. We cross the district road and reach Altastenberg again via the parallel "Höhenweg" with X14 and X27. At the village hall, we turn left downhill and take Renauweg on the right with X27 back to the starting point of our hike.Trail scouts: Elke and Helmut Otto© Hiking magazine
