In terms of mining history, the mine in Nuttlar is one of the most interesting relics of a long-gone mining era in the upper Ruhr Valley, which is deeply impressive due to its intactness and ability to be experienced. You will look in vain for gravel paths, concrete steps and electric light here. The guided tours take you past underground lakes, huge halls, over slate stairs and through high corridors. The quarrying techniques are explained on site and the splitting and shaping of the slate is clearly demonstrated using original tools.
