The mine has three different phases of development. The "three-stage mining" of late medieval mines can be seen here as an absolute rarity. Due to the narrowness of the tunnels, only one miner could usually be "on site". In three-stage mining, as in "Neu Glück", three miners worked one behind the other and thus made much faster progress.
Like so many mine galleries, part of "Neu Glück" was converted into an air-raid shelter during the war years of 1944/45, in which more than 100 citizens found protection. This phase of use, for which a second entrance to the tunnel was blasted into the mountain, is also presented. This is followed by the technology of modern times: the construction of the 734-metre-long Hestenberg tunnel, which literally cut through the old gallery and takes mine visitors underground almost to the tunnel,
with Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners, watching over the tunnel. And the tunnel has another special feature to offer: 25 American soldiers were once held as prisoners of war in a small adjoining room; however, they were liberated by their comrades without bloodshed after a few days. (HH)
Experience the history of mining up close on a guided tour and immerse yourself in the world of the miners!
Visitors to the "Neu Glück" lead ore mine don't have to walk long distances to get into the mine: the entrance to the mine is a short walk away, right in the middle of the town.
Information about the tour:
A maximum of 12 people can take part in each tour. Children are only allowed into the mine from the third primary school class onwards. We recommend a moderate level of fitness as some parts of the tour require bent-over walking. The mine is not accessible for the disabled. We recommend sturdy shoes and warm clothing, as temperatures underground are around 13°C. Helmets are provided free of charge. Safety helmets are issued free of charge.
Larger groups and special tours are possible by arrangement.
