In the past, life in Upland was characterized by hard work and bitter poverty; the meagre agricultural yields were barely enough to live on. In addition to grain, flax was grown on the barren soils of Upland and processed into linen.
This gave rise to the profession of Upland tradesmen, hundreds of whom still traveled the countryside in the 20th century, selling linen products and bringing home money. The "Linnenkerle" wore blue linen smocks with white embroidery, the bales of linen in a pannier on their backs and a yardstick, which served as both a walking stick and a measure. The Linnenkerle made Willingen known beyond its borders and laid the foundation for Willingen's rise to become a tourist center.
