The Kohlhagen Chapel near Niederberndorf was built in 1938 by siblings Josef and Berta Sasse. It replaced a wayside cross with a statue of the Virgin Mary and marks the historic end point of several crossroads from the surrounding villages.
Today, the chapel belongs to the village of Niederberndorf (town of Schmallenberg) and is maintained by an association. The central miraculous image - a copy of the Werl Madonna from the 12th century - stands on the altar.
Inside, paintings depict the patron saints of the surrounding villages: St. Blasius, St. Thomas, St. Lucia and St. Nicholas. The interior features arched windows, wooden benches and a bell rider roof.
The highlight of the year is the Ascension Day procession, for which the chapel is decorated with lavish floral decorations.
Next to the chapel is a refuge with a listening station ("Lauschpohl") on the history of regional reforestation.
