The hollow ways are remnants of the iron road coming from Meinerzhagen, which continued via Lüdenscheid to Hagen. For centuries, this route was an important connection for the transportation of goods, especially iron and metal goods.

Particularly striking at one point are the open ruts in the rock, which were dug into the ground by the wheels of the wagons. They illustrate the intensive use of the path and make the historical importance of transportation clearly comprehensible.

Due to their cultural-historical value, some of the hollow ways at the source of the Lister are protected as ground monuments and are regarded as important documents of regional transport and economic history.
