Built in the 14th century, the Hachtor was part of Rüthen's town fortifications and is the only one of the former four town gates that is still preserved. It is a very well-preserved building made of Rüthen green sandstone on a square ground plan. The passage is ogival. There is a round-arched niche on the side inside.
Rüthen lies on a ridge and the terrain is mostly flat to the north, so this area was particularly worthy of protection. For centuries, the gate also served as a prison for criminals coming from outside. The main gate and the front gate, which no longer exists, were connectedby a drawbridgevia the moat, which is still partially visible. The north side of the large gate tower was probably securedby a portcullisat the time.
From the Hachtor, the approx. 3 km long historic town wall runs around the entire Altstadt, which is also accessible and offers interesting views of the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park.
