The Esmecke-Stausee reservoir is located in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park to the north-west of the village of Wenholthausen. The reservoir belongs to the municipality of Eslohe and was built in 1971 from rock fill material.

The beautiful lake offers bathing fun for young and old, as the water warms up quickly. As there is a large sunbathing lawn in an adjacent bay, there are plenty of places to lie down. The DLRG station also ensures sufficient safety. The lake not only offers swimming opportunities, but is also available to anglers. The rest hut at the Einbergsee is managed.

In consultation with the public order office of the municipality of Eslohe, the district health authority has lifted the bathing ban that has been in place for the Esmecke-Stausee reservoir since 19.08.25.
The results of the latest water analysis show that there is currently no health risk due to blue-green algae toxins in contact with the lake water of the reservoir. However, the presence of blue-green algae is still so high that it clouds the water and may prevent bathers from seeing to the bottom.
The current bathing ban has therefore been lifted and converted into a bathing warning. People are expressly warned not to swim in the turbid area of the lake and are asked to avoid shallow areas of the shore where they cannot see to the bottom.
Dogs are still not allowed in the lake because of the risk of swallowing blue-green algae when chewing on aquatic plants.
