But don't worry: all of this can be easily explored on well-maintained and illuminated paths.
In the adjoining German Cave Museum, you can also learn all about caves. How are they formed? Where are the largest ones located? And who knows that the remains of dinosaurs have also been found in them?

The Dechenhöhle and the adjoining German Cave Museum are recognized extracurricular places of learning.

Time has stood still here. Discovered by railroad workers in 1868, the Iserlohn Dechenhöhle attracts over 60,000 visitors a year.
At a pleasant 10°C, the cave is worth a visit in any weather and at any time of year.

The brilliant LED lighting illuminates the fascinating play of colors of the up to 500,000-year-old stalactites.

As long as 1-2 million years ago, an underground river hollowed out the mountain like a Swiss cheese.
Over 20.000 m of cave passages have been explored to date, and the area surrounding the Dechenhöhle is considered to be Germany's cave-richest valley.

Speleologists and geologists are constantly uncovering more secrets underground.
Some of the thousands of cave bear bones that have been uncovered by researchers from the floor layers of the Dechenhöhle can even be seen from the tour route.

Special events are regularly held underground: During the "Cave Lights" (February/March), the colorfully illuminated cave itself becomes a work of light art, at Easter, the cave Easter bunny hides its colorful Easter eggs, on St. Martin's Day, the lantern tours take place with a play, and during Advent and Christmas, musicians delight visitors with traditional Christmas music.

Children's birthday parties and vacation adventure tours for children and families take place in the cave all year round.
Equipped with a bicycle helmet and flashlight, the little explorers also explore the winding side passages of the Dechenhöhle.
But adults also get their money's worth at concerts or whisky tastings.

For some years now, the excellent cave whisky has been maturing in the crystal grotto in a constant cave climate.
