After Engelbert von Berg, Archbishop of Cologne, fortified the town of Attendorn in 1222, he also began construction of Burg Schnellenberg at the same time. This is documented in an agreement with the Count of der Mark, to whom two fiefs at the castle were granted. The purpose of building the castle was to secure the Heidenstraße.
Today, Burg Schnellenberg is a 4-star Hotel-Restaurant. The property is still owned by the family of Baron von Fürstenberg-Herdringen. The city of Attendorn offers civil wedding ceremonies in the castle’s cross-vaulted hall.
