The airfield was opened in 1970 as a commercial airfield and was initially operated by the Arnsberg district and later by the Hochsauerland district until March 31, 2000. Since September 1, 2006, the airfield site and the associated infrastructure have been transferred to Flugplatzgesellschaft Arnsberg-Menden mbH.
The company behind the airfield company is OBO BETTERMANN GmbH und Co KG, which has held all the shares since April 2012.

Following extensive renovation, the airfield building has a modern corrugated iron façade. The stylishly furnished restaurant offers food and drinks as well as seasonal outdoor seating on the large terrace with a direct view of the airfield. A separate lounge area can be reserved for private parties or corporate events. Hotel guests enjoy a pleasant stay in newly designed hotel rooms.
