Arboretum Essenthoer Mühle

More than ten different species of oak—such as the Hungarian oak, the golden oak, the imperial oak, the red oak, and the Zer oak—have found a home in this tree park surrounding the mill. Many other tree species that are exotic to the region—such as sweetgum, purple birch, silver fir, trumpet tree, giant sequoia, curly ash, dogwood, thousand-flower tree, incense cedar, sweet chestnut, and the tree of heaven, also thrive here magnificently. But the wild service tree is also a special tree, prized for centuries as an excellent timber for furniture and construction and therefore mercilessly cut down. A handkerchief tree, grown by the owner himself from a fruit, keeps the wild service tree company along with a Japanese fir, a Leyland cypress, and a serviceberry.

The devil’s crook, also known as Japanese aralia, stands out because it looks more like a large shrub. It has a few thick branches with gray bark and prickly twigs. The slitted-leaf sumac next to it is a self-sown plant. The cinnamon maple a few meters further on can be recognized by its trunk with rough bark that looks like a thick cinnamon stick.
