Altstadt Air-Raid Shelter Tunnel

Because of its metal industry, Iserlohn produced war-related products during World War II and consequently became a target of air raids. The need to take protective measures for the population became apparent by 1943 at the latest. Construction of the air-raid shelter beneath the Oberste Stadtkirche began in late 1943. Originally planned to be 500 to 550 meters long, the shelter was intended to accommodate up to 6,600 people. By the end of the war, only about 200 meters of the tunnel had been completed. Prisoners of war were used for the construction; they were not allowed to enter the tunnel during air raids, and Jews were also barred from accessing the shelter.

The air-raid shelter can only be visited as part of a guided tour. As a safety measure, visitors are required to wear a helmet, which is provided by the City Museum. Dates for public guided tours are announced on the website of the Iserlohn City Museums.
