Cycling Together for a Good Cause

On Saturday, August 1, it’s time once again to hop on your bike and do some good together. That’s when this year’s charity event in support of “Kilometer für Kinder” will kick off for the third time at the Lennepark parking lot in Finnentrop. Riders will be cycling for parent groups supporting seriously ill children—and every kilometer counts.

Whether you’re riding a road bike, Gravelbike, e-bike, touring bike, scooter, or recumbent bike—everyone is welcome. The roughly 120-kilometer route, with about 1,000 meters of elevation gain, will be completed at a challenging but manageable average speed of 20 to 23 km/h. A group break at a bakery is planned after about 60 kilometers. However, anyone who wishes can shorten the tour to 80 kilometers afterward. There is no entry fee; instead, the organizers welcome voluntary donations, such as ten cents per kilometer ridden.

With the route following the SauerlandRadring, participants in the event can also expect ideal conditions. The route, which runs largely along former railroad tracks, features moderate gradients, wide curves, and a particularly pleasant riding experience—including varied landscapes, sweeping views, and well-maintained trails.

“The SauerlandRadring combines a sporting challenge with a rich experience of nature. It’s particularly well-suited for a charity event like this because it caters to many types of cyclists and fitness levels,” emphasizes Lajana Hebbecker, cycling liaison at Sauerland Tourism. “We are very happy to support ‘Kilometer für Kinder’ because it brings together exercise, community, and social engagement in an exemplary way.”

The tour is organized by Susanne Hücking and Guido Renner, who have been involved with the campaign for years. “It’s impressive to see how many people get on their bikes to support families with seriously ill children,” says Hücking. “Every kilometer ridden is a sign of solidarity—and together we can make a big difference,” adds Renner.
