Information

Directions

This winter hiking trail is cleared of snow, making for a particularly easy and enjoyable hike. The certified winter hiking trail follows the Hochheide Nature Trail, which runs across the Kahler Asten plateau without any inclines. At 25 stations along the Heid trail, you’ll learn about the importance of nature conservation—which is really about preserving our culture—about the “lawnmowers” of the Heid —the sheep, which ultimately ensure that this unique landscape is preserved—and explores many questions about animals, plants, weather, and history. The trail starts at the parking lot at the Bergasthof Kahler Asten. From here, follow the Sauerland-Höhenflug trail toward Altastenberg. The Sauerland-Höhenflug runs parallel to the Hochheidepfad. The trail offers magnificent views of the Kahler Asten. Halfway along the route, we leave the Sauerland-Höhenflug (which descends via a narrow path on the north slope) and continue hiking back to the Astenturm, where the bistro and restaurant invite you to stop for a break.

Equipment

When going on winter hikes, it's especially important to bring a cell phone. Sturdy shoes and warm clothing should go without saying.
