History and nature trail in Altena: "Green classroom"

The history and nature trail unfolds on a ridge opposite Burg Altena and presents itself as an extensive circular route. The first section provides insights into the history of the castle, which gained worldwide fame as the first youth hostel, as well as the local importance of iron and wire. This underlines the inseparable connection between nature and the industrial culture that shaped the area. The essential role of the forest for urban development is a focal point of the theme trail. Interactive display boards and models provide an in-depth look at the local flora and fauna. The trail continues to the Waldtipi and the legendary Steinsbörnchen, a fountain whose origin story is presented as part of the adventure elevator to the castle. The excursion culminates in the "green classroom" at Hexentanzplatz. There, a wooden figure commemorates the traditional gatherings of witches, for example on Walpurgis Night. Additional panels and exhibits provide comprehensive information about ecological relationships, climate change and aspects of environmental protection. A far-reaching view over Altena rounds off the experience.

An access path from Altena train station leads to the starting point of the nature trail at the Friedrichstor of Burg Altena (Fritz-Thomée-Straße).

From the A45 freeway (Sauerlandlinie), take the Lüdenscheid-Nord exit and then follow the signs to Altena.

From the A46, take the Iserlohn-Oestrich exit and then follow the signs to Altena.
