The history and nature trail starts opposite Burg Altena, a small circular trail of 1.6 km on the ridge. The first section provides information about the castle, the world's first youth hostel, iron and wire. Nature and (industrial) culture are closely linked in Altena.
The forest was and is essential for the town, which is why the themed trail also revolves around it. Display boards introduce the inhabitants of the forest and, with a bit of luck, you might even see a real one or two. You will pass the forest tipi and the legendary Steinsbörnchen, a fountain whose story is retold in the adventure elevator to the castle.
The hike ends in the "green classroom" at Hexentanzplatz. A wooden figure in the middle recalls the legend of the witches who meet to dance in the forest on Walpurgis Night (from April 30 to May 1). Display boards and models provide information about flora and fauna, climate and environmental protection. Great view over Altena!
The history and nature trail starts opposite Burg Altena and takes you on a circular route around the black stone. At the forest tipi, it takes a zigzag up or down.
From the A45 freeway (Sauerlandlinie), take the Lüdenscheid-Nord exit and then follow the signs to Altena.
From the A46, take the Iserlohn-Oestrich exit and then follow the signs to Altena.
