Some members of the Velmede-Bestwig village community came up with a plan to open the Veleda-Höhle to visitor groups. What initially seemed impossible was ultimately achieved—thanks to the support of local authorities and many caving enthusiasts from Südwestfalen—with the approval to open the cave.

In 2014, with financial support from the Leader project “Vier mitten im Sauerland” and funds from the municipality of Bestwig, walkways and stairs were installed in the Veleda-Höhle. The Velmede-Bestwig village community has made it its mission to showcase the cave’s unique features and the legends and stories surrounding it to interested visitors.

During the summer months, public guided tours of the Veleda Cave take place regularly. Individual appointments can be arranged.

From early October through late April, the cave serves as a winter roost for bats and, out of consideration for the animals, must not be entered.
