#deinsauerland / Neusta POIs / Upper Diemeltal Nature Reserve
Between Helminghausen on Diemelsee and Giershagen, the 187-hectare Upper Diemeltal Nature Reserve runs along the course of the Diemel River. The focus is on the largely undeveloped floodplain—a valuable habitat for plants and animals along the river. Parts of the Rhene and other tributaries are also included in the nature reserve.

The development of the Diemel River itself is particularly exciting: Since 2020, the river has been gradually being restored to its natural state. Among other things, side channels have been reconnected to the Diemel, and some bank reinforcements have been removed. Larger stones now serve as natural flow guides and provide more structure within the river.
This is gradually restoring a more natural river course with varied flow zones and habitats. The Upper Diemeltal is part of the “Diemel and Hoppecke Water System” FFH site and has been part of the “Diemel and Hoppecke Valleys with Adjacent Forests” bird sanctuary since 2023.
