Udorf is located in the Orpe Valley on the eastern slope of the Erlinghausen Platte, which is part of the Rotes Land region. The etymology of the place name—formerly Urdorp, Urdorph, or Urthorp—suggests that this is likely a very old village. “Ur” refers to a wet or damp spot where this settlement was established. The village appears very early on in a list of properties compiled by Erkenbert, Abbot of Corvey (1107–1128).
At that time, Corvey Abbey held manorial authority over Urthorp—that is, an entire villication. In 1166, Konrad, abbot of Marienmünster, sold a farmstead in Udorf to Abbot Ufo of Flechtdorf. Around 1191, Abbot Wedekind of Corvey stated that a certain Hildebrand had owned a farmstead in Urdorph, which paid tithes to the Church of St. Peter in Eresburg.
In the mid-13th century, in 1261/62, Adam von Aspe and the knight Appolonius, known as the Sviderichusen, donated various estates in Udorph to the Bredelar Monastery. In 1302, the Arolsen Monastery also acquired property here. In 1336, a portion of the tithe passed to the Canstein domain. In addition to this, Waldeck also maintained a district court in Udorf, to which all lands to the right of the Orpe River belonged. This Waldeck property, too, passed as a fief to the House of Canstein, which continually sought to expand its rights in this area. In 1506, Udorf was assigned to the Canstein domain along with various other villages, as Waldeck relinquished its judicial claims to the village in a treaty. Toward the end of the 17th century, Corvey granted its holdings in the village of Udorf—including hunting rights, fishing rights, and a mill—to the House of Canstein.
The Glockengrund themed hiking trail invites visitors to explore the unique landscape and natural surroundings in and around Udorf.
