St. John’s Church, one of Rüthen’s two Catholic parish churches, is a three-nave hall church built in the Neo-Gothic style between 1872 and 1874. The tower and the front chapel were rebuilt in 1737. The chapel houses Rüthen’s oldest work of art, the statue “Maria vom Stein,” carved from local green sandstone, likely shortly after the town of Rüthen was founded.

The Neo-Gothic nave, along with a choir featuring a 5/8 apse and side chapels, was constructed from 1871 to 1874 according to plans by Arnold Güldenpfennig. The choir is adorned with elaborate moldings and stained-glass windows dating from the time of its construction. In the three-bay nave, ribbed vaults rest on slender round pillars. The side aisles feature diamond-patterned vaults. The Baroque west tower, built in 1737, is situated to the west. It was constructed of roughly hewn green sandstone with corner ashlar. The rib-vaulted tower hall was opened up to the simple hall of the chapel and to the church. At the same time, the Neo-Baroque Marienkapelle, situated in front of the tower, was also built. It is a flat-roofed hall with richly decorated window frames. The chapel houses the miraculous image of “Maria vom Stein.”

The organ, featuring pneumatic cone chests, was installed in 1894 by Franz Eggert of Paderborn. The facade pipes were requisitioned for the war effort in 1917 and replaced in 1920. In 1978, Siegfried Sauer of Ottbergen electrified the action and installed new individual bellows. In 2005, he carried out an extensive restoration of the organ. With the exception of changes to the names of the stops, the soundwork, windchests, and facade have been preserved in their original condition
