First mentioned as early as 1031, the estate was owned by Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn and became part of the municipality of Bökenförde in the 16th century. Under the direction of the von Hörde dynasty and based on plans by architect Kitz, the castle was transformed into a magnificent Baroque structure between 1765 and 1768. Italian stucco artists refined the interior, while the Rococo-style orangery and the richly decorated chapel with its impressive altar are particular highlights.
After a fire in 1935, the castle was reconstructed with meticulous attention to detail. Since 1998, it has been privately owned by Dr. Otto Drosihn. For this reason, it is not open to the public, but it can be admired from a distance as a fairytale-like sight.
Schwarzenraben Castle is an attractive destination for bike tours around Lippstadt and, in addition to offering insights into history, provides a dreamlike backdrop for relaxing moments.
