As part of the“Scrubbing Posts for the Volme Valley”project, 20 artistically designed scrubbing posts are being installed in the four municipalities that have joined together to form the “Oben an der Volme” region. They are intended to highlight distinctive features of the Volme Valley, serve as landmarks, or invite reflection. The project is centered around Hiking Trail X20, which stretches over 20 kilometers and connects Schalksmühle, Halver, Kierspe, and Meinerzhagen.
The project was initiated and is sponsored by the VAKT Art Association in Halver. The NRW Ministry of Home Affairs, Municipal Affairs, Construction, and Gender Equality has funded the initiative. Minister Ina Scharrenbach personally delivered the grant notification to Halver on the Saturday before Christmas 2019.
Scratching posts have their origins in agriculture. Farmers placed them on Weides, so that livestock could rub against them. In the Volmetal region, the posts are also intended to symbolically highlight points of friction. They are meant to draw attention to special places, spark discussion, or help people rediscover their homeland.
