Between 1964 and 1969, a reservoir with a capacity of 1 million cubic meters was built on the Dahlberg near Rönkhausen, and another one, with a capacity of 1.3 million cubic meters, was built more than 270 meters below in the Glingetal valley. Using the machinery in the underground power plant—which combines pumps and turbines—water is pumped into the upper reservoir using inexpensive off-peak electricity, and this water is then used to generate electricity during peak demand periods.
In 2018–2019, the upper reservoir underwent extensive renovation. As part of this, the 1.3-kilometer-long loop trail around the upper reservoir was also renewed. An “energy trail” featuring scenic views, benches, and kilometer markers was created here. It also offers a 360-degree view of the beautiful landscape.
The trail around the upper reservoir is open to the public at all times and is accessible to people with disabilities.
