Oesdorf
Various Attractions
Oesdorf, idyllically situated in a valley basin below the Eggewald Forest and at the entrance to the Sauerland region, was first mentioned in 1170 in a deed of donation from the Bredelar Monastery under the name “Osningthorpe.” An early parish church is already mentioned in 1250 among the churches to which Knight Adam von Aspe made a donation. In 1518, Bredelar Abbey sold its Oesdorf estate to Dalheim Abbey, which subsequently exerted influence over Oesdorf in both economic and political-legal matters.

Since the Middle Ages, Oesdorf has had its own parish, which also served the Meerhof branch parish until 1902. Between 1803 and 1902, the villages of Blankenrode and Dalheim were added to the parish. This period also saw the work of the priest and local poet Ferdinand Heitemeyer.
The current parish church, dedicated to John the Baptist, was consecrated in 1893 and houses valuable 15th-century stone and wood sculptures that Pastor Adami brought to Oesdorf from the former Dalheim monastery.
In 1923, under the guidance of a teacher named Falke, a “Grotto of Our Lady” was built on the Waschhof, modeled after the Lourdes Grotto; it has been renovated time and again over the past decades by private individuals and village associations.
Oesdorf still has a close-knit village community that has built several projects through its own hard work, including a shooting range, a mortuary, a rectory, a sports field with a clubhouse, a fire station, a kindergarten, an EGV hut, a bus shelter with various bulletin boards, information signs, etc.
Until the municipal reorganization of 1975, Oesdorf was an independent municipality in the Büren district; today it is a district of the city of Marsberg in the Hochsauerland district.
