The former slate mine, where slate was mined from 1866 to 1927, has been used for therapeutic purposes for over 15 years. The slate mine has been examined through extensive procedures, air quality assessments, and studies to determine its health-promoting effects. The often astonishing improvements in health attributed to the so-called “Nordenau Phenomenon” have since been scientifically substantiated by research findings from a research group at Kyushu University in Fukuoka (Japan) and the collaborating Center for Holistic Medicine and Naturopathy in Nordenau. The spring, which originates within the tunnel’s energy field and is unique in Europe, provides high-quality “reduced water,” which acts as a highly potent free radical scavenger, helping to relieve the body’s cells of metabolic waste products (so-called free radicals). The microclimate prevailing in the slate tunnel is also unique. The temperature remains a constant 8°C year-round, and the air is saturated with water vapor to near capacity (nearly 100% humidity). The tunnel is therefore virtually free of dust particles, pathogens, and allergy-triggering pollen. In January 2011, Nordenau was granted official recognition as a location with a therapeutic tunnel spa facility.
