If you follow the M4 hiking trail from the Meschede train station, you’ll reach Hünenburg on a rocky outcrop above the Ruhr River.
These are the remains of a Carolingian fortification. They date back to the time of Charlemagne’s Saxon Wars.
From the castle, which was surrounded by two walls and a moat, there were sweeping views across the Hennen and Ruhrtal valleys.
The outer bailey (outer ring) covered 2.8 hectares, while the inner ring—the main castle—spanned 0.8 hectares. The castle likely dates back to the late 9th or early 10th century. Excavations have uncovered artifacts suggesting that the castle must have been inhabited for an extended period.
Today, there is a barbecue area at Hünenburg.
