Jesus-Christus-Kirche

The church’s history dates back a long way: Meinerzhagen was first mentioned as a parish in 1174. The present church building dates primarily from the first half of the 13th century and is designed as a Romanesque basilica with a gallery. It is considered the only example of this architectural type in the Märkischer Kreis and thus holds special cultural and historical significance.

In the 15th century, the choir was redesigned in the Late German Gothic style, while the striking west tower was not added until the 19th century. These phases of construction give the church its multifaceted architectural appearance.

Particularly worth seeing is the octagonal baptismal font in the apse, which is supported by medieval columns and ranks among the church’s most significant pieces of furnishings. Originally, the church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and bore the name “Our Lady.”

Today, the Jesus-Christus-Kirche is not only a place of worship but also a cultural gathering place. In addition to worship services, concerts and special events are held here regularly. As a stamp station on the Sauerland-Camino, it is also open to pilgrims who wish to take a break along the way or update their pilgrim pass.
