The Eversberg Cemetery of Honor is the final resting place for 915 World War II casualties who came from all parts of Germany. Most of those buried here are soldiers who fell in the Sauerland region in March and April. The graves of the soldiers led by Field Marshal Model were scattered throughout the Sauerland region. Some were located in meadows, gardens, or even along dirt roads. However, there were also soldiers’ graves in church and municipal cemeteries.

It proved difficult to find a suitable cemetery site. Soil conditions on the Klausenberg in Meschede or near the chapel in Winkhausen made reburial impossible. Finally, the current site near Eversberg was selected. Construction of this memorial began in the fall of 1958, and the final reburials took place in 1961.

The chapel was designed by the artist Schmidt-Elk. Rüthen sandstone was used as the building material. The dedication of the artwork “Mourning and Comfort” took place on July 9, 1961.
