The Fascination of Crystals
The Barite Museum in Medebach-Dreislar is a museum unlike any other: sounds, images, colors, and lights offer an immersive experience into the worlds of mining and mineralogy. The exhibition invites visitors on a journey of discovery to explore the fascinating crystals from the local underground.

The Barite Museum in Medebach-Dreislar showcases the beautiful “blossoms” that the mineral barite can form. A multimedia presentation brings the study of rocks to life in a whole new way and captivates even those with no background in mining.
Fascinating and vivid information makes the museum appealing to young and old alike. Here, the past and present are closely intertwined: Display panels trace the evolution of our planet through the geological eras, and in the reconstructed exhibition tunnel, visitors can experience the atmosphere of Dreislar’s 230-year mining history.
An audio guide is available for a rental fee of 1 euro; languages include German, Dutch, French, and English.
Tip for families: Mission Baryt
The last mine foreman from Dreislar knows many of the mountain’s secrets. If you follow his clues, you’ll find the treasure in the museum! Armed with a tablet and a “toolbag,” you’ll make your way through the exhibition: You’ll need to solve puzzles, search for clues, and answer questions to discover the treasure. The game can be played during regular opening hours.
Open from April through October:
Thursdays and Sundays from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Groups of at least 10 people can book an appointment outside of regular opening hours (see the museum’s website).
