Burg Bilstein is a spur castle situated on a foothill of the adjacent Rosenberg. This hill drops steeply on three sides, so that the castle’s defensive structures had to be oriented solely toward the mountain in a northeasterly direction.
The castle’s appearance is therefore dominated by its two round towers: the Kapellenturm and the Hohnekampturm. The towers are connected by a tunnel running beneath the castle courtyard. The wing in the southeast, on the other hand, was built in 1978 to expand the youth hostel. In front of the central building on the valley side is a veranda where a linden tree grows, visible from afar. Today, a stone bridge spans the partially filled-in, approximately 15-meter-wide Halsgraben moat, connecting the main castle and the outer bailey.
