Möhnesee

A hike in the cool Arnsberg forest. A bike ride around the lake. A day without hurry at the beach. An exciting visit inside the dam. Or just a relaxing view of the calm water from the lake stairs. There are many good reasons why the Westfälisches Meer has repeatedly been voted the favorite lake in North Rhine-Westphalia!

At the edge of the Sauerland, between the Soest Börde and the Arnsberg Forest, lies the municipality of Möhnesee with its main town Körbecke. 15 picturesque villages are grouped around the lake and provide a wide range of tourist attractions.

The imposing dam, which is more than 100 years old, is the main attraction of the region. 40 meters high and 650 meters long, it dams the largest dam in the Sauerland region. However, many other sights also invite you to take a sightseeing tour around the lake. The mysterious chapel in Drüggelte, the romantic Kanzelbrücke or the Möhnesee tower, which rewards the ascent with a magnificent panoramic view.

Visitors are offered a wide range of sporting activities: Almost every kind of water sport is possible on the Möhnesee. Several kilometers of hiking trails crisscross the Arnsberg forest and the fields up to the Haarstrang. And by bicycle, the radius can be extended to the surrounding towns, such as Soest or Bad Sassendorf. Nature lovers will find almost untouched landscapes in the Kleiberg pasture landscape, in the Möhneauen or on the Heve peninsula, home to thousands of water birds. Families have many opportunities to spend a varied day in the fresh air around the lake steps in Körbecke or in the wildlife park in Völlinghausen. And if the weather is bad, a visit to the landscape information center is a good idea. Gastronomic establishments for every taste and accommodations in every price range round off the tourist offer at the Westphalian Sea.
